John Freebairn Comtek Vice President

Comtek, a pan-European provider of telecoms and communications equipment repair services, has today announced that former Nortel Networks managing director John Freebairn has joined the company as group director and vice president of business development. In this newly created position, Freebairn will be responsible for spearheading the growth of Comtek’s telecoms business within Northern Ireland, as well as working with the senior management team across Comtek’s EMEA operations to drive Comtek’s global expansion.

With experience spanning more than three decades, Freebairn brings a wealth of knowledge to this new role at Comtek. Most recently, he was the managing director at Nortel Networks, a position he had held for close to five years. In this role he led a 500 person supply chain team through the process of divesting the business to a number of telecom equipment manufacturers. Prior to this, he held a variety of positions within Nortel, including leading engineering, quality and manufacturing operations at Nortel’s Operations Centre in Belfast through the 1990s and during the last decade running Nortel EMEA’s Business Operations and Supply Chain Operations including logistics, repair and customer service.

“We are delighted to welcome John to the team at Comtek,” said Askar Sheibani, CEO at Comtek. “The experience that he has accumulated over the years within the telecoms industry makes John a huge asset to Comtek as we look to expand our business in this area. Comtek’s already successful and dedicated Nortel labs will continue to thrive under such direction, particularly as we look to extend Comtek’s geographical presence.”

As part of his new role, Freebairn will manage the investment into the creation of Comtek’s state of the art Nortel telecoms repairs business in Northern Ireland and will work closely with Comtek’s senior management personnel in the UK, the Netherlands and Germany as the company looks to expand.

“I am thrilled to be joining Comtek at such a pivotal point in the organisation’s history,” said John Freebairn, group director and vice president of business development at Comtek. “With ambitious plans for growth and an already successful management team at the core of the company, I am looking forward to contributing to Comtek’s success in the future. Using my experience, I hope to help Comtek achieve its goal of becoming the leading global provider of telecoms repair services.”

A member of the Institute of Directors, Freebairn also sits on the board for the Centre for Competitiveness in Northern Ireland and is on the SEMTA (Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies), Northern Ireland.
